As a student of the Civil War Era for most of his adult life, Mr. Anders encountered in book after book the Radical Republicans and the troubles they caused, most often references to their malignant influence of brief profiles of the most prominent Radicals. Mr. Anders wrote Powerlust in hopes of beginning to fill that dangerous void.
While working on Powerlust, he said, "I was mindful not only of the tragic deprivation recent generations have suffered because of education commissars' removal from our curricula of American history - but also of George Santayana's powerful warning that those who do not remember the past are doomed to relive it."
